Hay Bags

Just posting a few pictures of the hockey net hay bags that we have improvised. We have 3 of them The one from Walmart is really holding up well and you can fit an entire small square bale in it. The one from Canadian tire is not holding up as well but we divided this one and made two bags out of it ..... the second I made about 2 weeks after the other so it is much easier to load. The hardware is also pictured here.

*******Please do not use small mesh hay bags if your horses have shoes. The mesh is small enough to catch a corner of the shoe and could cause injury.*******

Slow Feeders

We are about a month into using the slow feeders, or shall I say slow feeder ...... we have stopped using one all together. After several modifications we have decided we just need to start over. We are having much success with our indoor hard-sided feeder though and the horses have mastered it very quickly. Its capacity is about 5 flakes and it take about 4 hours to empty it.

In the last few weeks we have modified a few Hockey nets into large hay bags and they are working very well. I think actually that we will stick with those as they are much less expensive and easier to move about. We have used 2 nets, the first I purchased at Canadian tire for $29.99 and we made two hay bags from it, Not sure if this one is the best quality as our girls have managed a hole in this one after just a week or so. The second we purchased at Walmart for $19.99 and I basically just folded it and laced it up leaving a large hole in the top. This bag is big enough to fit one small square bale and is really easy to use. My personal favourite. The horses have had no difficulty mastering the bags and seem to prefer the hay in them to loose. Hard to believe! Our old guy has stopped quidding all together. I was worried he would lose weight but we have not noticed any wt. lose at all.

I have orders another 2 bags on line from Freedom Feeders and they have not arrived yet but I will keep this up to date on how they work.
